If the Windows XP registry is badly corrupted, you may be unable to start Windows even in safe mode, preventing you from using System Restore. However, you can restore the registry backups contained in a restore point using the Recovery Console.

Solution

I've run across dozens of machines recently with rampant infections of AntiVirus 2008 (aka WinAntiSpyware, Antivirus 2009, Antispyware Pro XP and AntiVirus Lab 2009 etc etc...

Mcafee and AVG detect these and tried to remove it, but fails... reinfection of reboot
AdAware and Spybot.. same thing

I've removed it manually and picked thru the registry by hand, a tedious task at best, with limited success

Then I come across this piece of freeware called Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Got rid of AntiVirus 2009 and a virtumonde infection with relative ease

Malwarebytes - Destroying malware, one byte at a time
